Birds are creatures unlike any others. With their unique ability to soar across the sky and sharp beaks, these creatures are able to be easily identified. This section discusses birds’ habitats and adaptations.

Habitats

Birds live in diverse places across the world. In the Africa, birds can live in wetlands, forests, mountains, and grasslands. Places such as the rainforest, mountains, and coasts. These creatures are able to adapt to their surroundings in amazing ways.

Adaptations

Birds are able to use their flying abilities to catch creatures in the air. Some are able to dive into bodies of water to catch creatures such as fish. These are a few ways that these creatures survive in their environments.

Animals

Some birds that live in forests include:

  • Ostrich:
    • Height: 6-8’.
    • Weight:
      • Females: about 249 lbs.
      • Males: up to 339 lbs.
    • Location: In central and southern Africa.
    • Adaptation:
      • These creatures can survive in deserts by getting all the water that they need from plants. However, they do drink water when it is available.
    • Food: Mainly plants.
    • Amazing Fact:
      • Ostriches swallow rocks to break up the plants that they have eaten.
  • Great Flamingo
    • Length: 4-4.8’.
    • Weight: 4.6-9 lbs.
    • Location: Eastern and southern parts of Africa.
    • Adaptation:
      • Theses creatures are able to withstand very harsh and high temperatures when they are in salt water. Also, these creatures feed their young one by using their tongue as a pump for putting a milky substance into their chicks’ mouth.
    • Food: They mainly eat aquatic invertebrates.
    • Amazing Fact:
      • If this animal does not have a good diet, then it will start to lose its color.

Birds are unique creatures located in the Africa. Their ability to fly in environments such as forests, mountains, and others makes them stand out from other creatures living in the Africa.
